In 1919 Abraham Penn founded Puritan Cape Cod with two key principles in mind: Service to the customer, and service to the community. The Abraham Penn Award was established to recognize an individual in the community who exemplifies these same principles.
This year Puritan is proud to announce David Troutman from Scargo Café as the winner of the 20th Annual Abraham Penn Award, nominated by the Dennis Chamber of Commerce.
As a year-round business in a sector noted for its seasonality, David’s commitment to the community is without question. Offering rewards and innovative winter marketing programs, David keeps local Cape Codders coming back all year long while providing employment opportunities throughout the entire year. Scargo Café also frequently has a presence at local events to engage the community, including the Taste of Dennis, CCYP Back to Business Bash, and the neighborhood Halloween gathering in Dennis Village. David and his brother Peter put their care, time, and service to donate food and money to make Cape Cod a better place.

David’s service extends beyond his work at Scargo Café. He was also a founding board member of Calmer Choice, and the Board Chair for seven years, where he helped work to provide tools for children to better navigate in a challenging and stressful environment. Through Calmer Choice, David has traveled around the country doing workshops and seminars, and represents the organization at Philanthropy Partners of Cape Cod and Cape Cod Young Professionals, of which he is also an active member. David is a graduate and presenter of Community Leadership Institute of Cape Cod, as well as a “third generation” member of Big Brother Big Sister of Cape Cod, and volunteers 6-8 hours a week with the YMCA Teen Achievers Program. David will also be dancing in this years Dancing with the Docs event to benefit Cape Cod Wellness Collaborative.
Thank you David for your commitment to your customers and community, and congratulations!
